Saint Kitts and Nevis: tax, residence and citizenship

Saint Kitts and Nevis combines an established citizenship programme with the absence of individual income tax described by its revenue authority. A citizenship application still requires due diligence, an interview and approval. Holding the passport does not establish tax residence or remove continuing UK tax liabilities.

Tax relocation in Saint Kitts and Nevis

The Inland Revenue Department confirms that income tax on individuals was abolished in 1980. It also explains that corporate income-tax and filing obligations continue. Consequently, a personal-income-tax headline should not be extended to a company, property transaction, payroll charge or every local obligation. A UK household must still establish its UK departure position and determine what tax residence and treaty evidence can actually be obtained. Second citizenship alone changes neither the location of business management nor taxation imposed by another country on its own income or assets.

Residence rights

Citizenship, if approved, is a national status rather than a time-limited investor visa. Applicants primarily seeking to live in the country should compare their practical residence and business needs with the cost of acquiring nationality. The programme authority currently states that the SISC route has no mandatory travel or residence requirement; a main-applicant interview is nevertheless required and may be virtual or at an approved location. That programme flexibility must not be presented as proof of local tax residence.

Second citizenship

The Sustainable Island State Contribution starts at USD 250,000 for one applicant or a qualifying family up to four. Additional dependants cost more. The official due-diligence charges are USD 10,000 for the main applicant and USD 7,500 for each dependant aged 16 or over. Applications use an authorised agent and undergo an interview and approval process. Check the current dependant definitions and all charges. Published processing ranges are not guarantees; international travel rights can also change.

What to establish first

  • Main applicant aged at least 18 and authorised-agent submission
  • Lawful funds, due diligence and main-applicant interview
  • Check current dependant eligibility and additional charges
  • Separate tax-residence and UK-departure assessment

Consider the trade-offs

  • A contribution is a sunk cost rather than an investment holding
  • No individual income tax does not mean no local taxes or charges
  • Corporate and UK obligations remain separate
  • Approval and foreign travel access cannot be guaranteed
