Grenada: tax, residence and citizenship

Grenada is relevant to families comparing a second nationality through a contribution or approved investment. Its official programme provides a defined application process and mandatory interview. It should be assessed for the rights it adds to an existing passport, alongside a separate review of tax residence and income sources.

Tax relocation in Grenada

Grenada has personal income tax: it is not accurate to advertise every resident as tax-free. The Inland Revenue Division identifies taxable employment, business and other income and a filing threshold for individuals earning above EC$36,000 annually. The published Income Tax Act uses Grenadian-source assessable income, with detailed deemed-source and business rules. Work performed locally can therefore matter even when the payer is overseas. The available statutory consolidation is older, so current amendments and the treatment of a client’s foreign income require local confirmation before making a tax-relocation recommendation.

Residence rights

The citizenship programme offers contribution and approved-project routes. Citizenship, if granted, supplies national status; purchasing an ordinary property alone is not the same route. Applicants seeking to live or operate a business in Grenada should separately assess the practical requirements for local registration, tax, banking and any regulated activity. The programme authority says a visit is not required for its application process, but an online interview is required. This should not be confused with establishing tax residence or satisfying any other country’s departure rules.

Second citizenship

The National Transformation Fund contribution is USD 235,000 for a single applicant or qualifying family of up to four, with additional family charges where applicable. Applications go through an authorised local agent, due diligence and an interview; the Minister makes the final decision. The authority publishes separate application, processing and due-diligence charges. Obtain a family-specific quote and check qualifying dependants. A successful application does not guarantee continuing visa-free access to any foreign destination.

What to establish first

  • Authorised local agent and complete source-of-funds evidence
  • Due diligence, character and medical documents
  • Mandatory interview and ministerial decision
  • Family-specific eligibility and charges

Consider the trade-offs

  • The contribution and application fees are not recoverable investments
  • Citizenship has no automatic effect on UK tax exposure
  • Travel access can change
  • Current local tax treatment requires confirmation before actual relocation
These are research findings, not an individual eligibility or tax determination. Confirm current rules and your circumstances before committing funds or moving.
